The latest edition of the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging – ISBI 2018 – was held only a few days ago in Washington DC. For those who are not familiar with it, ISBI is the key conference organized by IEEE around all scientific aspects of biological and biomedical imaging. For the first time ever, IEEE and RSIP Vision joined forces to launch a specific daily magazine for the Symposium. This is how Computer Vision News, following the extraordinary success of all the other dailies, published a new publication – the ISBI Daily magazine.
As expected, there has been a surge of papers using deep learning for applications across the entire scope of ISBI. As a consequence, the organizers created multiple oral and poster sessions dedicated to deep learning and papers using this technology were discussed in pretty much all sessions.

In the words of ISBI 2018 Program co-Chair Erik Meijering: “What was particularly striking in designing the program was the relatively large proportion of papers dealing with brain/neuro imaging applications. And at the same time we see the rise of deep learning methods based on artificial neural networks. In other words, it seems many of us are now studying the brain using methods inspired by the brain…”
The highlights of the program at ISBI 2018 were the keynote sessions, during which an extraordinary lineup of speakers offered talks of exceptional quality: let’s mention Anne Carpenter, who is Institute Scientist and Director of the Imaging Platform at the Broad Institute, and Laura Waller, who is associate professor at UC Berkeley in electrical engineering and computer science. In this ISBI Daily, you will find reports about great Oral and Poster Presentations, as well as the interviews with General co-Chair Scott Acton and Program co-Chair Ron Summers. Our Women in Science section of this first ever ISBI Daily series features fascinating talks with Maria Vakalopoulou, Jessica Sieren and Maria Sainz de Cea.
In the words of our Marketing Manager Ralph Anzarouth: “This ISBI Daily magazine is the result of IEEE (the organizer of ISBI) and RSIP Vision (the publisher of Computer Vision News) partnering to offer our community this ISBI Daily magazine during the symposium in Washington, just like CVPR and MICCAI do since 2016.”
Of course, as a global leader in computer vision, we will continue offering our publications as a gift to the algorithm community: our next CVPR Daily will be circulated on June 19 from the venue of CVPR 2018 in Salt Lake City, Utah; while ISBI 2019, always organized by IEEE, will be held on April 8-11 in Venice, Italy, at the Hilton Molino Stucky.
